Marie Antoinette Slippers

Marie Antoinette Slippers

Marie Antoinette was the daughter of the emperor and empress of Austria. She married Louis XVI in 1770, and the couple are today renowned for their impressive collection of interior decorations and artwork. “Madame Deficit” became the queen’s nickname after her spending habits on such material artefacts and on the 16th of October 1793 she was convicted of treason and guillotines, following the French revolution.

Every now and then we have something truly historic hitting the headlines within the footwear industry, and last week was no exception. Truly historic, is the two words I’d like to describe this as – A pair of Marie Antoinette’s slippers.

Yes, that’s right. Perhaps you caught the news that a pair of her gorgeous slippers were up for auction, and expected to fetch an estimate of about 10.000 euros? If you did, or not, you might be shocked to hear that they actually reached a final bid of 50.000 euros. As a lover of all the stunning shoes in the world, these slippers surely are on a completely different level. Luxurious, with a kitten heel. Do you see heels on slippers these days? A pointy toe that just sails through history and time – The decoration, trimmings and material are just outstanding. Never in a million years would my own slippers last for centuries, I’d be lucky if they’re not worn out by the end of the month.

This is the kind of headlines that really sparks my interest, intrigues and drives my love for footwear. There has to be someone out there making slippers like these today, if so even with the use of more high-street than high end worthy material? Marie Antoinette’s slippers were auctioned off at the Paris Ruout auction house and it’s been reported that the green-and-pink silk slippers has been flooded with bids from all over the world. I for one do not blame the wealthy for giving it a shot! It’s a piece of history. It’s true craftsmanship at its best and a stunningly preserved piece of history.
